Every Ramadan is a chance to improve oneself; spiritually, mentally, and physically. This year, the Bosniak Youth of New York has a lot planned for Ramadan. In preparation, BYNY is coordinating with ICNA Relief NY to host a food drive, which ends Friday, May 26th. Then, during the month of Ramadan, we will be joining several Dzemats in a coordinated event we like to call “Dzamija Dzumping.” All throughout the month of Ramadan, we will also be collecting toiletries in a coordinated drive with Care More to help those in need.
One of the many lessons often taken from fasting during the month of Ramadan is how blessed we are to have the basics of food and shelter. There are people who lack some of these basic necessities right at our doorsteps; a plane ticket isn’t required to make the world a better place. This month, BYNY wants to help share this blessing with those who are in need of food by teaming up with ICNA Relief NY. Until May 26th, we will be collecting either non-perishable foods, or money to buy food, to be later distributed during Ramadan.
During Ramadan, BYNY has also coordinated with several parties to continue the annual tradition we like to call “Dzamija Dzumping.” On given dates and locations, the youth gathers for iftar, prayer, and a lecture by a member of the local youth. This year comes with the addition of some new mosques, including a newly opened one in Pennsylvania. Throughout all of the events, there will be an opportunity to play a part in BYNY’s other drive; the toiletry drive.
Food, shelter, and clothing aren’t the only things needed for people going through a rough period in their lives. Often, little things as simple as a toothbrush can make a great difference. We here at BYNY will be collecting different toiletries throughout Ramadan to be later given out with Care More, the organization which makes this drive possible.
It is easy to get lost in one’s own world. Simple problems like keeping up grades in school, or trying to keep one’s fast often take center stage. It is important; however, to remember that there are many people around us who could use assistance which we are fully capable of. Muhamed (S.A.W) once said, “A man’s true wealth is the good he does in this world.” Be the person whose wealth resides in the improvement of the lives of others. We urge everyone to consider donating to either the food or toiletry drive. In each person exists a reality; a world of their own. By helping even just one person, for just one moment, will, in fact, change the world for the better.
